Why I Love Sports!

While I was working today the Olympic Gold Medal hockey game was on. In the midst of getting my butt kicked by the 15 tables I had (all at the same time), I was able to watch some of the game. I love sports in general and hockey is in my top 3 favorite sports to watch. I like the idea of people coming together for a common goal. Today it was to cheer on the US hockey team in their match against Canada. Sadly, USA didn't win but it was a fun game all the same. When we scored the goal with 15 seconds left and tied up the game I thought the bar I work in was going to explode with excitement. I'm sure every sports bar in the US had the same thing going on! Canada had their moment at the end of the match. ;)
I love (especially when it's a national thing) the pride that comes with seeing your team (or athlete) do well in a competition. It brings people of different beliefs and backgrounds together and for just a moment we forget all about our differences. Now I realize that, in the case of some sports and athletes, a bad taste is left in the mouths of some. And I get that there are many things that bring people together but I like that sports seem to have a universal appeal that most of the other things don't. This is my reason for watching the Olympics every time they come around. Plus there really isn't any other time I can watch Curling on TV!
Now I get to look forward to The Masters, The Triple Crown, Wimbledon, The World Cup and of course my favorite, (American) Football in the fall! Togetherness and pride all over the place!!
